Isle of Wight Council’s strategic priorities for 2022/23 include climate emergency, and Barnfield Solar Farm could help the Council achieve its target to contribute towards lower energy bills for the community.

According to a poll of residents across all British constituencies published on 7th September more than 77% of Britons back renewable technologies to tackle the rise in energy costs.

The polling shows strong support across the board for building new wind and solar farms which generate electricity much more cheaply than currently high-priced gas. 76% of all those polled supported offshore wind, 81% backed solar and 74% were in favour of onshore wind.

Support for Planning Application Barnfield Solar Farm 22/01793/FUL

Barnfield Solar Farm will help Isle of Wight and the UK meet renewable energy and carbon saving targets, including the council’s aspiration of being net carbon zero by as a whole island community by 2040. It will also go toward ensuring the UK has a secure energy supply for the future.

It will significantly improve biodiversity on the site, with an increase in wildlife habitats and biodiversity, by planting additional hedgerows and trees as well as increasing the foraging habitat for mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians in the form of diverse species grassland under and around the solar array where arable was formally present.

The site will produce enough clean, green electricity to power over 9,900 homes per year (based on Ofgem’s typical consumption value for a medium sized house)

The site can be used for grazing as part of traditional meadow management, which is designed to benefit both food production and biodiversity.

The solar farm is completely reversible at the end of its life, with all equipment removed
